Melatonin

Melatonin is a hormone made by the pineal gland, a small endocrine gland located in the center region of the brain. It helps to regulate other hormones and the body's 24-hour "internal clock," or circadian rhythm, which controls the sleep-wake-cycle. Melatonin is designed to naturally rise mid-to-late evening and taper off in the early hours of the morning. Production of this hormone may slowly decrease with age.

"Circadian rhythm" refers to any biological process that follows an approximate 24-hour cycle, responding to environmental cues like light and darkness. "Circadian" is derived from Latin, and translates to "around the day." This cycle can be found in most living things, including animals, plants and microbes. Processes linked to this rhythm include certain brain wave activity, hormone production, cell regeneration and sleep.

Melatonin is used to support many sleep-related issues, including insomnia, jet lag and shift work (night shifts). It is also used to promote relief from Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), or “seasonal depression.”

Valerian

Valerian is a delicate flowering perennial native to Europe and Asia. Its name is derived from the Latin valere, meaning "to be strong."

Since the second century A.D., the valerian root has been used to naturally subdue insomnia, anxiety and nervousness. It is thought valerian may work by increasing gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA) in the brain, although this has not been proven.

GABA is the primary inhibitory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system, which has a calming effect on the body and promotes a focused mind.
